The demolition derby is a ritual where people make a sacrifice to some sort of god of destruction. This deliberate wreckage is a holiday - a hall pass from being an adult, and the only time they can act out games once played in their fathers’ shops with toy plastic cars. It’s fun. The pain is a side effect, a hangover. All drivers go in with a plan, but as soon as the first cars collide, everyone is out for blood. Only one makes it out with a running engine, a cup full of cash, and bragging rights to last the long Maine winter.
